8 Things You Should Know After Stroke

July 25, 2018 By David Goldenberg

Strokes happen suddenly in older adults, leaving families to deal with an aftermath they are not prepared for. The first step in helping your aging relative to recover from a stroke is to learn as much about stroke and what to expect as possible. Below are 8 post-stroke facts to get you started.

Senior Care in Villanova PA: Things to Know After a Stroke

Senior Care in Villanova PA: Things to Know After a Stroke

1. Stroke Survivors Are at Risk for a Second Stroke.

People who have had a stroke are at a higher risk for having another. The National Stroke Association says that around 795,000 people in the U.S. have strokes each year. Of those, 185,000 are a second stroke. Because of the high risk, it’s important to take steps to prevent another, like ensuring the senior eats a healthy diet, takes their medication, and exercises.

2. Some Races Are at an Even Higher Risk for a Second Stroke.

Studies show that people who are African American or Hispanic are at greater risk of having another stroke than Caucasians. One study showed that people who had a specific kind of stroke, called a bleeding stroke, had a second stroke at the following rate:

  • Caucasians: 1.7 percent.
  • Hispanics: 6.1 percent.
  • African Americans: 6.6 percent.

3. Stroke Rehabilitation Should Start Quickly.

Experts at the Mayo Clinic say that patients should begin rehabilitation as soon after a stroke as possible for the best results. In fact, your aging relative might start their rehabilitation program before they even get out of the hospital.

4. Stroke Recovery Takes Time.

Although the biggest gains are typically seen in the first four months after a stroke, it is possible for the senior’s condition to continue to improve for as long as two years after a stroke.

5. Stroke Survivors Often Become Depressed.

It’s not uncommon for people who have had a stroke to suffer from depression. Between 30 and 50 percent of stroke survivors experience depression. Watch for signs of depression and report them to the doctor.

6. Stroke Rehabilitation Requires a Team.

After a stroke, your older family member will likely be assigned a team of people to help with their recovery, including physical and occupational therapists, a speech therapist, a social worker, doctors, and nurses.

7. Support from Friends and Family Impacts Recovery.

The Mayo Clinic says there are several factors that impact how well a person recovers after a stroke. One of those things is the support system around them. Friends and family who provide assistance and encouragement can make a big difference.

8. Senior Care Can Complete the Support System.

Senior care can provide your loved one with another layer of support. Senior care providers can be hired through an agency to come to the older adult’s home to assist them throughout their recovery. Senior care providers can remind them to take their medication, assist with rehabilitation activities, and help them with personal care, like dressing and grooming.

Setting Your Parent Up for a More Active Lifestyle in the New Year

December 28, 2017 By Cerie Goldenberg, MSW, LSW

Being physically active is one of the most important elements of achieving and maintaining better health and well-being throughout life. This does not change with age. In fact, encouraging your senior to stay active as they age can make a tremendous difference in their physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being, help them to manage illnesses and health challenges, and work to ward off other issues. As the new year approaches, focus your caregiver attention on setting your parent up for a more active lifestyle by taking steps now and making plans for the future.

Senior Care in Villanova PA: Staying Active in the New Year

Senior Care in Villanova PA: Staying Active in the New Year

Use these tips to set your parent up for a more active lifestyle in the new year:

  • Research your parent’s area to find parks and other locations where your senior can take walks or enjoy other outdoor recreation. Knowing about these locations makes both of you more familiar with them so that you can feel more confident experiencing them together.
  • Gift your parent simple and accessible exercise equipment such as light barbells, resistance bands, or a seated biking machine that lets your parent pedal while sitting.
  • Encourage your senior to find an activity that they can enjoy in their community, such as a senior aerobics class, water aerobics class, a dance group, or a tai chi group.
  • Set up scheduled times that you will enjoy physical activities with your parent. Being there with them is a fantastic way to not only motivate them to stay more active, but also to spend meaningful quality time with you.

Starting senior care can be one of the best decisions that you can make for your aging loved one during the course of your caregiver journey with them. A senior home care services provider can be with your aging parent on a fully customized schedule to ensure that they have continued access to the care, assistance, support, and companionship that they need to manage their individual needs. Not only will this highly personalized care help your parent to address their challenges and limitations in a way that is right for them, but will also encourage your parent to live the lifestyle that is as independent, active, and fulfilling as possible as they age in place. As a family caregiver, this will give you peace of mind knowing that your parent is getting everything that they need to live their highest quality of life both when you are able to be with them and when you are not.

Senior Care Awareness: Heart Attack Symptoms in Women

February 12, 2016 By Cerie Goldenberg, MSW, LSW

Senior Care in Villanova PA

senior care in villanova PADid you know that heart disease is the leading killer of women, and that more women will lose their lives to heart disease each year than to breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and all other cancers combined? February is American Heart Month, the perfect opportunity for you to show your aging mother than you “heart” her beyond the chocolates, candies, flowers, and other gifts that tend to dominate thoughts around this time of year. Making your senior mother’s heart health an important focus of your senior care journey with her allows you to protect her while also encouraging a happy, healthy, and fulfilling quality of life throughout her aging years.

Something very important to note about women and heart disease is that this “silent killer” frequently shows different symptoms in women than it does in men. This is part of the reason why more people think of men when it comes to heart disease and dying from complications such as heart attacks than they do women. By understanding the most common symptoms of issues such as a heart attack you can be prepared to see recognize these symptoms in your elderly mother and take the proper steps to address them quickly, effectively, and efficiently.

Common symptoms of heart attack in women include:

  • A squeezing sensation or feeling of fullness in the center of her chest that lasts for several minutes. It may also go away for a little while and then come back. This symptom is often mistaken for indigestion or not swallowing food or a beverage all the way
  • Pain or an uncomfortable sensation in the stomach, throughout the jaw and neck, in the back, or in one or both of her arms
  • Feeling short of breath without having another explanation for it, or feeling more short of breath than she should in relation to the activity that she is doing
  • Sudden lightheadedness
  • Sudden unexplained nausea
  • Cold sweats
  • Sudden extreme fatigue
  • Like men, women may also experience chest pain, but it is less likely that they will experience this as their primary symptom.

Many people assume that heart attacks are dramatic, easy to identify events, but the truth is, especially with elderly women, these serious issues can go largely unnoticed. Your mother may think that she is just a bit under the weather or that something that she ate is not agreeing with her, and may not seek out proper medical attention, which could result in very serious health consequences.

Protecting your mother from a heart attack starts with understanding her heart health. Start with bringing her to see her doctor and discussing her personal risks for heart disease and what you can do within your senior care journey to reduce that risk. Some easy ways that you and your mother’s senior health care services provider can help her live a more heart-healthy lifestyle include cutting down on saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium in her diet, encouraging her to quit smoking, and getting up and active more often. Let American Heart Month be the start of your journey of loving your mother’s heart.

January 15, 2016 By Cerie Goldenberg, MSW, LSW

Senior Care in Villanova PA

Preparing delicious, nutritious homemade meals for your aging loved ones is one of the most nurturing activities of your senior care journey. By preparing these meals you are showing your Senior-Care-Villanova-PAparents how much you love them and how much you care about them getting the nutrition that they need in order to stay healthy and strong. This is also an important way to make sure that the food that they are eating is good quality and contains the nutrients that they need, without the things that they do not need.

While you are preparing meals that will give your parents and the rest of your family reliable nutrition, you should also make sure you prepare food that they will enjoy eating. Food should be a source of enjoyment and connection, and this recipe is all about warmth, comfort, and crowd-pleasing flavor. Filled with high quality protein from meat and antioxidants and vitamins from tomatoes, green peppers, celery, and garlic, this sauce is ideal for your favorite spaghetti dinner, but can also add flavor, satisfaction, and nutrition to your lasagna, eggplant parmesan, or even a bowl of steamed vegetables for a meal that cuts the carbs but not the flavor factor.
